- Over 50, out of shape, sitting most of the day either working on the computer or relaxing or watching the boob tube. Yeah, that was me two years ago. Something happened.
My name’s Ray and I’m 55 years old at this writing. I have been in the computer business for the last 26 years which means I’ve sat in a chair for untold hours and gained weight and lost muscle and the sad part is that it happened so slowly that I didn’t even realize it was happening.
Two years ago, my wife, Jan (age 53), and I decided we needed to get healthy. We joined a gym and started going a couple times a week and I was shocked that in just a week or so I saw a bit of a bicep show up on my arms. It told me two things – one, I was so out of shape, that I didn’t HAVE a bicep before, and two, it doesn’t take that much to start gaining muscle back even at age 54.
This was enough motivation to get me going pretty regularly 3 times a week. After about 6 months of this and fair progress (200 lbs down to 183 and some gained strength) I hired a personal trainer who kicked my butt every workout. He guided me on my diet, and 9 months later I’m in the best shape of my life at 157 pounds. But in trying to find activities and sports to participate in, I found the information very difficult to find. Over 50 athletes don’t seem to congregate in any particular spot or website and learning how to get involved with the olympics was quite a chore. So I felt I should start a website that could help others shortcut my learning process and thus, over50athletes.com was born.
Articles, websites, and other information on over 50 fitness, sports, athletics, is very welcome. Please email them to me at ray@over50athletes.com.
I want to remain fit for the rest of my life and being a competitive person, I knew I had to find some competitive activities to keep myself interested and fit. I now play racquetball and softball and am getting involved with the Senior Olympics Games and other sports for “over 50s”. I’ve also started scuba diving and rock climbing.
I hope you enjoy the site, learn a lot, and get fit and compete in sports.
Wishing you the best of health and fitness.
